Funchal is an ideal base for a trip to Madeira, offering a perfect blend of culture, food, and history while also being a central location for day trips and adventures, whether by car or not. I personally stayed in Funchal for a month and found it to be a great location for exploring the island.

A light breakfast is included in the stay, and there is also a furnished kitchen available for guests to prepare their own meals.

Additionally, it is famous for its picturesque sunsets and hiking trails. I stayed in Calheta for my first five weeks in Madeira Island and appreciated the daily dose of sunshine. It was a great base for exploring the central and western hikes and viewpoints.

The village has a few restaurants, bars and shops, making it the perfect destination for those looking for a more tranquil and natural experience.
